Help with THE HELM

Short answers, grouped by area. Search, or jump to a section.

Getting started

What is THE HELM?

A mobile app for iOS and Android that helps you run your day like a watch: you set a short list of daily commitments (Today’s Orders), keep your word, and back a small Crew doing the same. Progress earns XP and moves you up the Career Ranks.

Is there a web or desktop version?

No. THE HELM is native to iOS and Android only. This website is for information, support and legal pages — there is no browser version and no web sign-in.

How do I set up my first Watch?

Onboarding walks you through it: welcome aboard, build your Watch by adding at least one real habit, then Report for Duty. Your first Voyage and its Standing Orders start straight away — there’s no waiting for Monday.

Account & login

How do I sign in?

You sign in with your email through the app. Your session is kept on your device so you stay signed in between visits.

I can’t sign in.

Check the email address you used and that your device has a connection, then try again. If you’re still stuck, contact support (below) with the email address on the account.

How do I change my display name or avatar?

Open your profile in the app. Display name and avatar emoji can be edited there where your account allows it.

Today’s Orders / Watch

How does logging work?

Each Order has its own “+ Log” action. Binary Orders complete in one tap; measurable Orders ask how much you actually did, in your chosen unit. Meeting the daily commitment stands that Watch once — extra effort counts as Overtime.

What is Overtime?

Effort beyond an Order’s daily target. It can earn some extra Career XP and can feed genuine cumulative-volume Voyage goals, but it never creates a second completion, streak or reward for the same day.

Why can I only have five habits?

THE HELM keeps the Watch deliberately short. Five active habits is the maximum, so the list stays a commitment rather than a backlog.

What is screen discipline?

An optional daily entry for time spent on your phone. Higher amounts apply an XP penalty on a fixed schedule. Forgetting to enter it does not penalise you.

Crew

What is Today’s Watch?

At noon in your Crew’s timezone, your active Orders are locked in and posted to your Crewmates as a card showing each Order, its progress and your total. Everyone’s cards sit together so the Crew can see how the day is going.

What is a Clean Sweep?

When every eligible Crew member finishes all of their locked Orders before midnight, the Crew earns a Clean Sweep. It’s recognition, not currency — it doesn’t pay XP or Doubloons.

How do I join or create a Crew?

Open the Crew tab and choose Create Ship or Join Ship. Joining uses an invite code from an existing Crew. A Crew is optional — you can use THE HELM solo.

What happens to my data if I leave a Crew?

Leaving ends your current membership and shared visibility. All of your personal progression — habits, Logbook, XP, Career, Doubloons, Voyages and Cabin — stays with you.

Career / XP / Doubloons

How do I earn XP and rank up?

Valid logs earn XP. XP raises your current level, and reaching level thresholds earns Career Ranks from Deckhand up to Master. The highest rank you earn is permanent, even if XP later drops.

What are Doubloons for?

Doubloons are the in-app currency you earn through play. You spend them in the Chandlery on Cabin fittings and companions.

Can I buy or cash out Doubloons or XP?

No. XP, Doubloons and Bond have no cash value and cannot be purchased, transferred or exchanged for money.

Voyages

What is a Voyage?

A seven-day personal objective cycle anchored to when you started, not a shared Monday reset. Each cycle has one Official Voyage; from the rank of Bosun you also get one Personal Custom Voyage.

What are Standing Orders?

Three objectives that run alongside your current Voyage. Completing each earns XP, with a bonus for completing all three.

Cabin & companions

What is the Cabin?

A personal space you fit out with fittings bought in the Chandlery. It’s expressive only — it doesn’t award XP or affect your Career or Crew.

Polly or Wolly?

You can keep one active companion. Polly the parrot needs the Ship’s Perch; Wolly the seagull needs the Dock Bollard. Both cost Doubloons and eat their own food — Crackers for Polly, Hot Chips for Wolly.

What is Bond?

A 0–100 measure of your relationship with your companion, built through daily care, finishing your Orders, weekly milestones and Companion Quests. It never decays. Giving up a companion forfeits its Bond.

Notifications

What notifications does THE HELM send?

Only local reminders on your own device — currently an optional early-evening reminder to feed an active companion. There is no remote push system.

How do I turn them off?

Decline the notification permission, or turn notifications for THE HELM off in your device settings. Reminders also cancel automatically when you feed your companion, change companion, or sign out.

Profile photo

Who can see my profile photo?

Only your current Crew. It’s stored privately under your account and is not public.

How do I change or remove it?

In your profile in the app you can replace or remove your photo. Choosing a photo uses your device’s photo picker — THE HELM does not use your camera.

Account deletion

How do I delete my account?

Server-side account deletion is being built and is not available yet. Today the app offers a guarded sign-out that clears local data on your device. See the Delete your account page for the current position and what’s coming.

Does signing out delete my account?

No. Sign-out clears caches on your device but does not remove your account, your data on the server, or your profile photo.

Report a problem

I found a bug.

Tell us what you did, what you expected, and what happened, plus your device model, OS version, and the app version. During Beta, please also use whatever feedback channel your tester invite provides.

Something looks wrong with my XP, rank or Doubloons.

Note the time it happened and what you had just done, and contact support. Progression is server-authoritative, so we can usually reconstruct what occurred.

How do I report another member’s behaviour?

Contact support with your Crew and a description of what happened. Conduct that breaks the Terms of Use can lead to content removal or account suspension.
